Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Pottery Embassy unique?

Pottery Embassy is the first and only private pottery studio in Blenheim operating as a dedicated workshop studio. Created as a welcoming creative space for beginners and pottery lovers alike, the studio is designed to encourage people to slow down, work with their hands, and reconnect through clay.

Every detail of the space has been thoughtfully considered to create a calm, inspiring, and approachable environment for learning pottery. From wheel throwing experiences to hand-building workshops, Pottery Embassy focuses on creativity, mindfulness, and accessible pottery education in a relaxed studio setting.

More than just a pottery studio, Pottery Embassy is a space to unplug, create, learn new skills, and connect with others through handmade experiences.

Is there parking nearby?

Yes. Pottery Embassy is located in Blenheim CBD at Shop 11, Market Street, with a range of nearby parking options available.

There is metered street parking available throughout Market Street and surrounding central streets. Free time-limited parking can also be found within parts of the Blenheim CBD, including nearby side streets and public parking areas within walking distance of the studio.

As parking availability can vary during busy periods, we recommend allowing a little extra time before your workshop to find parking and settle in before class begins.

What’s the difference between wheel throwing and hand-building?

Wheel throwing involves shaping clay on a spinning pottery wheel to create forms such as mugs, bowls, and vases. It is a more dynamic and hands-on process that can take time and practice to learn, but many people find it highly rewarding and enjoyable.

Hand-building creates pottery without the use of a wheel, using techniques such as pinching, coiling, and slab building. It is generally more relaxed, beginner-friendly, and allows for more sculptural and organic forms.

Many potters enjoy learning both techniques, as each offers a very different creative experience.

Do I need pottery experience?

No experience is needed. Our workshops are designed for beginners and first-time participants. You’ll be guided step-by-step throughout the session.

Is wheel throwing difficult to learn?

Learning the pottery wheel takes practice, patience, and a willingness to experiment. Your first experience on the wheel may feel challenging at first, but that’s completely normal. As you spend more time working with the clay and understanding how it moves on the wheel, the process gradually starts to feel more natural.

Every person learns differently. Based on experience, some students begin to feel comfortable on the wheel after a single course, while others may take several classes before they fully understand the process and build confidence. Pottery is a skill developed over time, and everyone progresses at their own pace.

Our workshops are designed for beginners, and you’ll be guided step-by-step throughout the session.

What happens if I’m running late?

You’re still welcome to join the workshop when you arrive, however classes will finish at the scheduled end time out of respect for other participants and studio scheduling.

We recommend arriving 5–10 minutes early to settle in, get comfortable, and be ready to start creating.

What happens if I miss my workshop or class?

One-off workshops:
All workshop bookings are final. However, if you are unable to attend, you are welcome to send someone in your place. Please contact Pottery Embassy before the workshop begins with the replacement participant’s name.

Multi-week courses:
If you miss a class, we will do our best to offer a make-up session within the same week, subject to availability and wheel space.

Please note:

  • Pottery Embassy has limited student wheels available per class

  • Make-up sessions cannot be guaranteed if classes are fully booked

  • Students may not use the instructor demonstration wheel

  • Missed classes cannot be transferred, credited, or rolled over into future courses or workshop sessions

As a small studio, class numbers and equipment capacity are carefully managed to ensure the best experience for all participants.

What should I wear?

Please wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a little messy. Clay washes out easily, but pottery can be hands-on. Short nails are also recommended for wheel throwing sessions.

What is included in the workshop?

Clay, glazing, and kiln firings are not included in standard class fees and are charged separately unless otherwise stated. Some selected workshops include glazing, firing, and finished pieces within the workshop price.

How long are the workshops?

Most workshops run between 2–2.5 hours depending on the session type and group size.

How often do you post new classes?

We typically post new one-off wheel-throwing workshops around the first week of every month. 5-week courses are posted 4-6 weeks in advance. Hand building workshops varies.

Will my pottery be glazed and fired?

Yes. Your selected pieces will be glazed and kiln fired after the workshop. Finished work is food-safe and functional unless otherwise stated.

Can I keep everything I make?

Workshop pricing includes a limited number of finished pieces depending on the class. Additional pieces may incur extra firing and glazing fees.

What happens if I don’t finish all my pieces during class?

Please keep track of your time during workshops and classes, as session times include making, cleaning, and pack-down. Due to limited studio space and kiln capacity, unfinished or unclaimed work cannot be stored indefinitely.

Any unfired greenware (unfired clay pieces) left incomplete after the final class may be recycled within 1 week unless prior arrangements have been made.

Bisque-fired work awaiting glazing, and completed finished pieces, should be collected within 1 month of notification. While every effort is made to care for student work, Pottery Embassy cannot guarantee long-term storage due to limited shelving and studio space.

How long does firing take?

Pottery takes time to dry, fire, glaze, and cool safely. Finished pieces are usually ready within 6-8 weeks depending on kiln schedules and weather conditions.

Hi! It’s been around 8 weeks now — when will my pieces be ready for pickup?

If your piece is taking longer than the original pickup timeframe, we sincerely apologize. Unfortunately, weather can play a big role in the pottery process. For example, if we have a full week of rain, it can delay drying times and push completion dates back by about a week.

Please note that drying pottery is a natural process and isn’t something I’m able to speed up without risking damage to your pieces.

What if my piece cracks or breaks?

Pottery is a handmade process and occasional cracking or breakage can happen during drying or firing. While every care is taken, Pottery Embassy cannot guarantee all pieces will survive the kiln process.

Can I collect my pottery later?

Yes. You’ll be notified once your work is ready for collection. Pieces should be collected within a reasonable timeframe due to limited storage space.

Do you offer refunds or rescheduling?

Workshop and course bookings are non-refundable. If you cannot attend, please contact us as early as possible. Rescheduling may be offered depending on availability.

I can no longer attend my workshop/course. Can I transfer to another session?

Workshop spaces are limited and often fill quickly. Transfers to another workshop or session are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed.

Please contact Pottery Embassy as early as possible if you need to request a transfer. Transfers are only available 1 month prior to the workshop start date and are not eligible for credit toward future workshops unless otherwise agreed.

As a small studio, cancellations and late changes can significantly impact scheduling and preparation. We appreciate your understanding.

Are workshops suitable for children?

Some workshops are suitable for children when accompanied by an adult. Age suitability will be listed on each workshop description. Wheel workshops are 16+.

Can you do pottery while pregnant?

In most cases, yes — pottery can be a safe and enjoyable creative activity during pregnancy. However, we recommend checking with your GP or healthcare provider before attending classes.

Pottery is generally considered a low-impact activity, however there are a few important considerations during pregnancy. We recommend wearing a mask and gloves where appropriate, washing hands thoroughly after handling clay and studio materials, and avoiding unnecessary exposure to dust or glaze materials. Some pregnant participants may prefer to avoid glazing processes due to potential chemical sensitivities.

Wheel throwing can also become physically uncomfortable later in pregnancy due to posture and leaning forward. Many people find hand-building workshops more comfortable during this time.

Please let your instructor know if you are pregnant so we can help make the experience as comfortable and supportive as possible.

Do you offer private events?

Yes. Pottery Embassy offers private workshops for birthdays, team-building events, schools, and small group gatherings.

What happens during a wheel throwing workshop?

Wheel throwing workshops are beginner-friendly experiences where participants learn the basics of centering clay and creating simple pottery forms on the wheel. The focus is on creativity, process, and trying something new.

Studio Etiquette & Cleaning

Students are required to clean their tools, workspace, and any equipment used after each class. Please allow 15 minutes for cleaning within your scheduled session time, with pack-down beginning before the end of class.

All tools and surfaces must be wiped down, and your workspace should be left clean and tidy for the next group. These shared studio practices help ensure the space runs smoothly and allows tutors sufficient time to finish and prepare the studio between sessions.

Do you fire pottery made outside of Pottery Embassy?

At this stage, Pottery Embassy does not offer firing services for pottery created outside of the studio. This helps ensure kiln compatibility, firing consistency, and the safety of studio equipment and other participants’ work.

Can I drop in or walk in for a workshop?

At this stage, Pottery Embassy does not offer public walk-ins or casual drop-in workshops. All workshops, courses, and studio sessions must be booked in advance through our website. This helps ensure that appropriate preparation, equipment, materials, and instructor support are available for each participant.

Limited practice sessions may be available for current students enrolled in multi-week courses who are already familiar with studio processes and safety guidelines. Practice sessions are subject to availability and must be arranged in advance by contacting Pottery Embassy directly.

Can I trade studio work for studio time?

We love supporting our local community! We offer a limited work-exchange program where you can trade a few hours of studio help for creative time on the wheels.
