Coyote Matte (Matt) glazes are a family of ceramic glazes that fire to a non-glossy, velvety surface rather than a shiny one. They’re prized for their strong, stable colour tones and dependable performance, especially on sculptural work, tiles, or the outside of functional pottery.
What Matte Glazes Do
  • Non-gloss finish: Instead of a glossy, glass-like surface, matte glazes produce a soft, satin or stone-like appearance that feels smooth but not shiny — ideal when you want a more subtle, tactile quality.
  • Strong, stable colours: These glazes give a rich colour without the glare of gloss, and they are formulated to be stable and reliable in mid-fire (cone 5–6) firings — meaning they almost never run or behave unpredictably in the kiln.
  • Great for texture: Matte glazes often accentuate surface texture — carved marks, impressed patterns, and sculptural details show beautifully under a matte surface.
Where They’re Commonly Used
  • Exterior surfaces of functional pottery: Matte outside surfaces can contrast nicely with gloss interiors on mugs, bowls, and plates.
  • Sculptural or decorative work: The non-shiny finish enhances form and surface without distraction.
  • Tiles or architectural pieces: The stone-like quality makes them suitable for decorative tiles and mixed media work.
In Your Studio or Class
Matte glazes are an excellent option for students who want natural, understated finishes that emphasise form and colour tone without gloss. Because they are quite forgiving and behave reliably in firing, they’re a solid choice for both beginners and more advanced students in your glaze sessions.
