Sometimes the best way to improve at pottery is simply to spend more time with your hands in clay.

Pottery Embassy’s Open Studio Membership gives you regular access to the studio to work on your own pottery, practise your wheel skills, hand-build, trim, decorate and explore new ideas without the structure of a formal class.

Come in with a project in mind, practise something you’ve recently learned, or simply see where the clay takes you. Open Studio is about having the time, space and equipment to keep creating independently.

You’ll be working alongside other pottery lovers in a relaxed and friendly studio where everyone can work on their own projects, share ideas and enjoy some creative time together.

There’s no set project and no weekly lesson plan — your studio time is yours to use in the way that works for you.

Open Studio is best suited to potters who already have some experience and are comfortable working independently.

Weekend Access

Selected Saturday and Sunday studio time may also be available between 10:00am–5:00pm, depending on the studio schedule.

All Open Studio access is subject to availability and booking is required.

Pottery Embassy classes, courses, workshops and events take priority. There may be times when studio space or pottery wheels are limited or unavailable.

Your All Access Membership gives you greater flexibility to book available studio time, but does not guarantee a wheel or workspace at every requested time.

Minimum membership term: 3 months.

Weeknight Memberships Are Now Open

Our Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday Evening Memberships are now open!

Choose your preferred evening and enjoy dedicated weekly studio time to practise, create and continue developing your wheel-throwing skills independently.

Each membership is linked to your chosen evening and can only be used during that designated weekly session.

Minimum Membership Requirement: 3 months

To open each evening studio session, we require a minimum of 10 members registered for that designated night.

For example, Monday evening will commence once 10 Monday memberships have been filled, and the same applies to Tuesday and Wednesday.

If your preferred evening has not yet reached the minimum number of members, we'll keep you updated and let you know as soon as the session is ready to begin.

Drop In & Create

Visiting the area or simply want some occasional pottery time without committing to a membership?

Experienced potters are welcome to book casual Open Studio time for $13 per hour, subject to studio and wheel availability.

Please bring your own 5-litre bucket, cleaning cloth and pottery tools. All clay slurry must be taken home with you.

Clay, glazing and firing are not included in the hourly studio fee and are charged separately.

What’s Included

Clay, glazing and firing are not included in your membership fee.

Specialist equipment, kilns and restricted studio equipment are not available for independent member use unless specifically approved by Pottery Embassy.

Open Studio is primarily an independent practice space. General guidance may occasionally be available, but these sessions are not structured or tutored pottery classes.

Booking Your Studio Time

All Open Studio visits must be booked in advance.

Bookings are subject to studio, workspace and wheel availability.

Pottery Embassy classes, courses, workshops and events take priority over Open Studio access.

Membership gives you access to book available studio time within your membership level but does not guarantee a pottery wheel or workspace at every requested session.

We recommend booking early, particularly if you require a wheel or would like to attend an evening session.

Experienced Potters & Independent Studio Use

Open Studio is an independent, self-directed studio space rather than a structured teaching class.

Members should be comfortable working independently and have a basic understanding of pottery techniques and studio practices.

We recommend completing at least three beginner pottery classes with Pottery Embassy, or having equivalent experience from another pottery studio, before becoming a member. This ensures you have the basic knowledge and confidence needed to use your membership time to practise, experiment and explore your own projects safely.

Please remember that Open Studio Membership is independent practice time, not a one-on-one pottery lesson. While a tutor may be available to offer occasional guidance or answer questions, membership sessions are not intended for teaching the fundamentals of pottery or providing ongoing individual tuition.

If you are still learning the basics and require regular tutor support, we recommend joining one of our beginner courses first. Once you have the foundations, Open Studio is a great way to continue practising and developing your skills at your own pace.

Self-taught potters are also welcome — simply get in touch before joining so we can make sure Open Studio is suitable for you.

All Access Evening Access

All Access members approved for independent evening studio access may occasionally be responsible for closing the studio when they are the last person to leave.

The last approved member leaving the studio must follow Pottery Embassy’s closing procedure, including ensuring equipment is switched off where required, work areas are clean and tidy, lights are turned off and the premises are properly secured and locked.

Independent evening and closing access is available to approved members only and remains at the discretion of Pottery Embassy.

Please allow enough time to clean your workspace and complete any closing responsibilities before the studio closes.

Current Pottery Embassy Students

Students currently enrolled in an eligible Pottery Embassy pottery course receive free Regular daytime Open Studio access for the duration of their course, unless otherwise stated.

Student access is subject to availability, advance booking and available wheel capacity.

Free student Open Studio access does not include All Access hours or independent evening access.

Bringing a Guest

Members are welcome to bring an experienced pottery friend to Open Studio, subject to availability and advance booking.

Guest studio access is $13 per hour.

Guests must have sufficient pottery experience to work safely and independently and must follow all Pottery Embassy studio rules.

Guests are the responsibility of the member who invites them and do not receive independent access to the studio.

Tools

Members must bring and use their own personal pottery tools.

Throwing tool sets can be purchased from Pottery Embassy for $20 per set.

Personal tools must be cleaned appropriately and taken home after each session.

Clay & Firing

Clay, glazing and firing are not included in your membership fee.

Clay can be purchased directly from Pottery Embassy.

Member firing rates:

Bisque firing — $10/kg
Glaze firing — $20/kg

Glaze cost are as follows: dipping glaze is $8/kgs and brush on glaze starts at $5 per piece

Firing charges may vary depending on the dimensions and requirements of individual pieces.

Kiln loading, firing and unloading are managed by Pottery Embassy unless otherwise specifically approved.

Cleaning Responsibilities

Open Studio is a shared creative space, and everyone is responsible for leaving their workspace, wheel, tools and equipment clean and ready for the next person.

Please allow enough time at the end of your booked studio time for cleaning.

Members must bring a 5-litre bucket to every Open Studio session. Your bucket is used to collect throwing water and clay slurry, which must be taken home with you.

To protect our studio plumbing, clay slurry and clay-contaminated water must never be poured down the studio sinks.

Thank you for helping us keep Pottery Embassy clean, safe and enjoyable for everyone. We recommend familiarising yourself with our Healthy and Safety Guidelines too.

Membership Terms

Memberships run from the 1st of each month through to the end of the month, with a minimum membership term of three months.

Monthly payments are due on the 1st of each month.

If you join partway through the month, your first payment will be prorated to cover the remaining days of that month. This initial payment will need to be made directly at the studio.

Your three-month minimum membership will then begin on the 1st of the following month. From that date, you can set up your regular monthly membership payment.

After your initial three-month membership period, your membership continues monthly.

If you wish to cancel your membership after the minimum term, please provide Pottery Embassy with one month’s notice.
